Toyo Seikan Group is committed to realizing a decarbonized society under the mid- to long-term environmental goals in its Eco Action Plan 2030. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% across the entire group’s business activities by fiscal year 2030, compared to fiscal year 2019, and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The introduction of electricity from renewable energy sources is one of the key initiatives for achieving this goal.
TESS Engineering installed a self-consumption solar power generation system on the rooftops of Toyo Seikan’s Shizuoka Plant and will own and maintain that system under an on-site PPA model, supplying electricity from renewable sources. The generation capacity is approximately 1.6 MW, with an estimated annual power generation of about 1,919 MWh, which will all be supplied to the Shizuoka Plant, resulting in an expected reduction of approximately 810 tons of CO2 emissions annually2.
For Toyo Seikan, this initiative required no initial investment for the installation of the solar power generation system and is expected to provide a long-term, stable power supply, unaffected by fluctuations in electricity demand or issues with fuel supplies. The solar power generation system is also equipped with batteries (three 15 kWh units); during power outages, electricity can therefore be supplied through emergency outlets, allowing the use of electric appliances, excluding production equipment. Furthermore, the system is designed to directly charge the batteries with electricity from the solar power generation system, addressing both Toyo Seikan’s zero-carbon and business continuity plan needs.
It is notable that this initiative has received a joint grant under the Project for Promoting Cost Reductions in Solar Power Generation Facilities for Achieving Storage Parity, which partly subsidizes expenses for introducing self-consumption solar power generation facilities and batteries under on-site PPA models, among other initiatives.
