Toyo Seikan Group Holdings Selected as a Technology Development Partner by the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO)
-Supporting Mass Production of Next-Gen Flexible Solar Power Generation Panels Through the MiraNeo® Functional Materials Brand-
Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, Ltd. has been selected as a technology development partner by the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (“TNO”; headquarters: The Hague, Netherlands)1, creating a cooperative relationship to evaluate products from the MiraNeo® functional materials brand. Toyo Seikan Group Holdings will fully collaborate in the EU MC 2.0 project2, which will develop mass customization of integrated solar power systems in Europe. Together, the organizations will work on the mass production of next-generation flexible solar power generation panels in Europe, including cost-effective perovskite solar cells. Through an ongoing collaboration with TNO, Toyo Seikan Group Holdings aims to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the realization of a sustainable society by promoting the widespread use of clean energy.
Toyo Seikan Group Holdings is supporting efficient design and manufacturing methods for solar power generation panels by expanding the MiraNeo® product line; specifically, in collaboration with TNO, we will develop products that meet the quality and performance requirements of the EU MC 2.0 Project, such as patterned back sheets, which are protective sheets for the backs of solar power generation panels. Unlike conventional back sheets, these have pre-formed electrical conduction patterns, which improve the efficiency of electricity extraction and simplify the design by eliminating the need for electrodes and other parts, resulting in both lighter, more flexible designs and reduced costs. We will also develop other products, including front sheets—which are applied to the surfaces of solar cells to protect them from wind, rain, and ultraviolet rays—and edge seals for solar power generation panels that prevent the ingress of moisture and other elements, thus extending their lifespans. These products will be developed to meet the required specifications.
1 TNO, which was established by the Dutch Parliament, is one of the largest independent applied science research and development institutions in Europe. Its diverse research activities are highly regarded internationally, and it actively supports the creation of new businesses and of new products and services based on cutting-edge research.
2 The EU MC 2.0 Project is an EU initiative led by TNO that seeks to develop mass customization of integrated solar power systems in Europe, advancing the traditional approach by providing customer-specific products with both high productivity and low cost. The project seeks to establish a mass production system for customized products by 2026, using flexible and automated production lines and allowing cost-effective mass production of next-gen flexible solar power generation panels, including perovskite solar cells, in Europe.
