Support and Participation in External Organizations and Initiatives

Toyo Seikan Group supports and participates in the following initiatives to promote sustainability issues.

United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is a global initiative that brings together the United Nations and the private sector (companies and organizations) to achieve sustainable growth. Signatory companies and organizations are required to support and practice 10 principles related to the protection of human rights, the elimination of unfair labor practices, environmental protection, and anti-corruption.
Toyo Seikan Group signed the UNGC in support of the principles in October 2022. By conducting responsible business activities in accordance with the 10 principles and taking action to achieve the SDGs, we will contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
We are also a member of the Global Compact Network Japan, a local network of the UNGC. In each subcommittee, participants learn from practical examples from other companies and experts, discuss sustainability concepts and initiatives, and exchange information. Participating companies and organizations also work together to produce deliverables and disseminate information.

United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)

TCFD stands for the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, which was established by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) at the request of the G20 and chaired by Michael Bloomberg to consider climate-related information disclosure and how financial institutions should respond. The TCFD published its final report in June 2017, recommending that companies disclose information related to climate change-related risks and opportunities. Toyo Seikan Group Holdings has signed the TCFD and will continue to disclose information based on the framework.

SBT Initiative (SBTi)

SBT is an international initiative that certifies that companies' greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets are aligned with the standards of the Paris Agreement and based on science.
Toyo Seikan Group 's GHG emission reduction target was certified as a "1.5℃ target" by SBT in March 2023.

Ellen MacArthur Foundation

Toyo Seikan Group has joined the UK's Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) as a member with the aim of gaining knowledge about the circular economy (CE) and collaborating with other companies. The Group is the fourth Japanese company and the first packaging manufacturer to join. EMF is a charitable organization established in 2010 with the aim of accelerating the global transition to a circular economy through collaboration with companies, government agencies, and research institutes. Through workshops hosted by EMF and joint projects with member companies, the Group hopes to contribute to the transition to a resource-circulating society by leveraging its strengths as a comprehensive packaging manufacturer to propose "containers and solutions made from a variety of materials" tailored to the circumstances of each country and region.

Clean Ocean Materials Alliance (CLOMA)

This platform was established to accelerate innovation by promoting the sustainable use of plastic products and the development and introduction of alternative materials in order to solve the new global issue of marine plastic waste. Toyo Seikan Group Holdings has participated in the platform as a managing company since the preparatory stage of its establishment, and is active as a key member of the Promotion Subcommittee, which is responsible for sharing information and promoting collaboration with stakeholders across industries.

As a member company of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), Toyo Seikan Group respects and practices the spirit of its Charter of Corporate Behavior.

Keidanren Biodiversity Declaration Initiative

Toyo Seikan Group supports the "Keidanren Biodiversity Declaration and Action Guidelines" and participates in the Keidanren Biodiversity Declaration Initiative. Toward the realization of a society in harmony with nature as set out in the mid- to long-term environmental goal of "Eco Action Plan 2030," we are working to build a blue carbon ecosystem in collaboration with NPOs and to solve the problem of marine plastic waste through corporate alliances.

Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex)

Sedex provides businesses with the practical tools they need to drive more socially and environmentally responsible practices in their own operations and in their dealings with suppliers, and represents a community of 75,000 companies and 100,000 sites worldwide.
As a member of Sedex, Toyo Seikan Group protects workers, local communities, and the environment, and promotes management of its business and supply chain.

Our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives have been highly praised, and we have been consistently selected for multiple ESG investment indices, including five ESG investment indices adopted by the Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) for domestic stocks (as of June 2025).

The FTSE Blossom Japan Index uses the ESG evaluation scheme of the FTSE4Good Japan Index to reflect the performance of Japanese companies with excellent ESG practices, and is designed to be industry-neutral.
The FTSE Blossom Japan Sector Relative Index is a sector-neutral index that reflects the performance of Japanese companies with relatively strong ESG practices in each sector. In order to promote the transition to a low-carbon economy, the index only includes companies with particularly high greenhouse gas emissions that are recognized for their efforts to improve their management quality through the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) management score.

MSCI Japan Equity ESG Select Leaders Index *3

The MSCI Japan Equity ESG Select Leaders Index is composed of companies with relatively superior ESG evaluations from each industry sector, among the stocks that make up the MSCI Japan Equity IMI Index.

S&P/JPX Carbon Efficient Index

The S&P/JPX Carbon Efficient Index covers stocks that make up the TOPIX, and determines the weighting of constituent stocks based on their environmental information disclosure status and carbon efficiency (carbon emissions per sales).

Morningstar Japan Equity Gender Diversity Tilt Index (excluding REITs)

The Morningstar Japan Equity Gender Diversity Tilt Index (excluding REITs) was created by Morningstar and is constructed with an emphasis on companies that have established gender diversity policies that are ingrained in their corporate culture and that are committed to providing equal opportunities to employees regardless of gender.

The Dow Jones Best-in-Class Asia Pacific Index is a leading stock index for ESG investment, jointly developed by S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM. Corporate activities are evaluated from the three perspectives of environment, society, and governance, and companies with outstanding sustainability are selected as constituents.

  • The Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index will be renamed the Dow Jones Best-in-Class Asia Pacific Index in February 2025.
