Toyo Kohan Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Masahiro Kai; hereinafter referred to as "Toyo Kohan"), a consolidated subsidiary of our company, has been developing a micro-hydroelectric power plant at its Kudamatsu Plant based on the "Agreement on the Supply of Electricity and Tap Water in Times of Disaster" (concluded on October 1, 2023) with Kudamatsu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The power plant has now been completed, and an unveiling ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
This power plant is a renewable energy facility *1 that utilizes unused hydroelectric energy within the company premises. Its purpose is to contribute to reducing environmental impact *2 during normal times, and to serve as an emergency power source and emergency (drinking) water supply base *3 during disasters. It is the first hydroelectric power generation project in Japan implemented by a private company within its own business premises to meet the FIT (Feed-in Tariff) regional utilization requirements (according to Toyo Kohan research, April 2026).
On that day, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and site tour were held to commemorate the completion, with attendees including Mayor Masuo Kunii of Kudamatsu City, Director Koji Ohno of the Kudamatsu City Waterworks Bureau, and President Tetsuya Matsuura of DK-Power Co., Ltd.
① Name: Toyo Kohan Kudamatsu Plant Micro Hydroelectric Power Plant
② Power generation method: Pump-reverse turbine type, pipe channel type (manufactured by DK-Power Co., Ltd.)
③ Power output: 19.9kW
④ Estimated power generation: 125,000 kWh/year (Greenhouse gas reduction: 60 tons/year)
⑤ Head: 20m x Maximum flow rate: 0.2㎥/sec
⑥ Area: 210㎡
⑦ Start date of operation: October 30, 2025
*1 Water supplied from the Oyashikiyama Water Treatment Plant is received in an elevated water tank within Toyo Kohan Kudamatsu Plant and used for manufacturing and drinking water within the Kudamatsu Plant. The energy generated from the difference in elevation was previously unused and was therefore underutilized.
*2 All of the electricity generated is sold using the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) system for renewable energy.
*3 The plant is equipped with a battery as an emergency power source, which can be lent out to external parties upon request from Kudamatsu City, and can also be brought in and charged by external parties for use in evacuation centers, etc. In addition, water can be supplied to water tankers at the disaster relief water supply station located next to the power plant. Because it utilizes the drop in elevation from the Oyashikiyama Water Treatment Plant, as long as water is supplied to the power plant, electricity and drinking water can be supplied even if the surrounding area experiences a power outage.
Toyo Kohan will promote the introduction of renewable energy and new technologies to realize a decarbonized society, and aim to become a manufacturing base that contributes to the local community.
Founded in 1934 as Japan's first private tinplate manufacturer, Toyo Kohan has built up its unique technologies in iron rolling, surface treatment, and other areas over the course of its history, and has expanded into product areas other than iron, such as aluminum and resin, to continue to provide a wide range of products and services that support people's lives.
Toyo Kohan 's reason for existence is to "create new value by pursuing the possibilities of technology and contribute to the development of society together with our customers." We will continue to take on new technological challenges and provide our customers with products and services that only Toyo Kohan can offer, thereby contributing to the realization of safe, secure, and prosperous lives for people and a sustainable society.
